Cross-Cultural Experience—Yalin Chen

When I came to Columbus, the people I met first were my host family and I lived with in their house for four days. They are really kind, but the way they treated a guest is different form Chinese’s. Usually, in a Chinese family, they treat a guest extremely “politely”. They would not let a guest to do any chores and they prepared all things for the guest, like breakfast. However, in my host family, they introduced kitchen for me and let me to use it freely, including making breakfast by myself. It is different in Chinese family, which will prepare breakfast for you. When the male host asked his daughters for helping him dry the dishes, I told him that I wanted to help them; he gladly to accept that. When I was drying the dishes with their daughters and talking about my life in china, it really like I am a member in this family

Besides, I have a strong feeling in air condition indoors. It is really cold and I freeze all the time. It is really necessary to bring a jacket all the time, though it is not that useful.

Similarly, most food in the US is really cold and it really hurt my Asian stomach. I have soup and rice everyday in my country, but the diet change a lot in Columbus. Carbonated drink and sandwiches became my each meal; it really takes time to be accustomed to the local food.

Party culture in the US is really crazy. They party all the time even in the morning. As it is seldom to hear a party in China,to feel the atmosphere of our school parties will be a a funny part in my life in Columbus.
