Cross-Cultural Experience---Yuhang Yi

After about 3 week I first arrived in Columbus, I have been some good places, like Buffalo Wild Wings who has delicious hot chicken wings and Gateway Film Center which is a nice place to watch a movie. I watched “The Bourne Legacy” with my host family over there. But as a student, I would like to participate in school activities.

On August 20th night at 8 p.m., my friend and I supposed to watch a secret show in Ohio Union. However, it seemed everyone knew it. We arrived at Union at 6:30 p.m. (we though it was early enough), but the line already turned 3 times. Many students waited for the show there and some of them were even holding food in hand. Probably they just grabbed something to eat from expresses and come here immediately. Around 8, the line started moving. After everybody had taken a seat, the “8th Floor Improv” casts went on stage and made a brief introduction. The show started with picking a word for improvisation by audiences and “Chimpanzee” was being selected. Without further ado, casts pretended they were in a zoo watching a chimpanzee. They were using many funny words and gestures to attract its attention, but it turned out that chimpanzee ignored them and ran away. Then they played several diverse scenes after that one. For examples, there were a chatting up between two gays, a conversation in restroom and a couple (two boys acted) in a doctor’s office. Just so many crazy situations were played one after the other. And casts also random chose an audience and had an interview with him or her. On that day, they interviewed an American freshman girl and especially made fun of her Minnesota’s roommate’s accent. The funniest part was they made fun on president E. Gordon Gee and Buckeye Brutus. Almost everyone in there was laughing and clapping at that time. And in the end, they played a words guessing game. It was fun that one of the cast mimicked Indian accent. During the whole performance, people just couldn’t help stopping laughing and clapping. It was a great show.

I’m sorry that I couldn’t offer more detail about the show due to it included lots of dirty words and impolite gestures. Don’t over thinking, that’s the way they just try to please you. I really recommend my classmates to watch it at least once. Maybe you cannot understand some of those jokes because of culture background, but I still suggest you to go for it. You can see part of American culture that freedom of speech and especially humorous. I always feel humorous is a one of the American spirits. So they even dared to use their university’s president as a material. That probably will never happen in public in China. Anyway, I hope you guys get opportunities to enjoy it.

  1. Sounds like an interesting activity. I am curious how much of the humor you understood.
