Cross-Cultural Experience--Jingyun Zhu

After arriving at Columbus, I found that several problems such as food and studying in my life.

I lived in a host family before I moving in OSU’s dorm. The first problem is that living environment quick different from Chinese style. The floor covers with carpets even concluding stairs. In China, my apartment doesn’t cover with carpets. We usually put a small carpet under the tea table in the living room. Nowadays, China has heavy air pollution, even though my mother cleans the carpet many times, it still has a little dirty onside. We don’t use carpets in whole rooms. The reason is that cleaning is a fatigue job and carpet always dirty quickly, so my family using wood floor and ceramic tiles in whole rooms. Another problem is that basin using style is different from my manner. In my family, my mother usually uses the basin to wash different kinds of clothes, which couldn’t be used to wash socks, silk clothes and underwear. However, I saw that other student washed clothes in laundry and didn’t sort their clothes by the same kind. I am following my mother’s methods to wash my clothes. Strangely, I can’t find any basins in Target. Finally, I bought a box to instead of it. Whatever, I have to accept this style.

Furthermore, food is entirely different from China. I ate fired chicken, beef, potatoes and tasteless vegetables that are terrible tastes. I can’t image that I need to eat them in next 8 moths. I miss Chinese food so much. Chinese foods are different from America’s. Chinese style is that when chef cooks vegetable with meat, they always puts many seasonings such as salt, sugar, soy sauce and sesame oil in their dishes. Normally, American food is cold such as sandwich, but I don’t like eating cold food. However, I like cold water even in winter. 

In addition, America’s education style is perfect for me, because teacher never require us to hand in our homework day-to-day. In China, the situation is quick different from American’s. For example; math teacher usually gives homework covering 30 questions and English teacher also lefts 3 pages reading as read section of homework and each page has 10 questions. Students have to finish a mount of heavy homework in one night. The reason is that tomorrow morning they need to hand in their achievements to teachers. I need to do this day -to- day and I hate it. Finally, Accepting U.S.’s living style is the most important thing in recent days. I will hard work in U.S..
